GDP Provisional Estimate 2010 - 11


Provisional estimates for 2010-11 Gross Domestic product (GDP) were released today, 23 April 2012.  The Tongan economy grew by 4.7 percent in 2010-11.  This is the fourth consecutive year of growth as the Kingdom rebuilds after the 2006 fires which destroyed a large part of the Nuku'alofa central business district.  The main contributors to this year's increase were:

  • construction (up 16.9 percent) due to new structures and roads financed by international donors and the China EXIM bank soft-loan
  • forestry (up 72.1 percent) due to exports of sandalwood
  • fishing (up 11.7 perc ent) due to increased seafood exports.

Consumer Price Index for March 2012


The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for March 2012 has recorded an increase of 1.4% over February 2012 (104.1) and now stands at 105.6.  When comparing March 2012 to February 2012, both the Local and Import Indexes were increased by 2.6% and 0.7% respectively.  The prices for the previous two months, January 2012 marked no changed, 0.0% and February 2012 recorded  and increased of 0.5%.

The Annual Rate of Inflation for March 2012 is 1.8%, he lowest since 1.5% in January 2010, whereas Local and Imported Annual Inflation Rate were 0.4% and 2.8% respectively. The annual inflation for the same month of previous year, March 2011 was 7.5%.

The first New Zealand National Certificate in Official Statistics Course for Public Sector conducted in Tonga begins today (26th January 2012)

The course aims to enhance the statistical skills and build knowledge and confidence in employees of Tonga's Government Departments that produce official statistics.

Population Census 2011 Preliminary Count

The Statistics Department is pleased to release the Preliminary Count of this Census 2011 which accounted to 103,036 people, an annual increase of 0.2% from 101,991 people recorded in the Population Census 0f 2006.

New Zealand Certificate of Official Statistics - Tonga 2012 course

The Statistics Department Tonga in collaboration with Victoria University of Wellington and Statistics New Zealand will present the New Zealand National Certificate in Public Sector Services (Official Statistics). The course aims to enhance the statistical skills and build knowledge and confidence in employees of Tonga's government departments that produce official statistics. It will provide practical instruction on statistical methods, ethics and the use of statistics in a public sector context. Course tutors areProfessor Sharleen Forbes and Dr Richard Arnold.
